What does a camera L-bracket do?

Using the ball head drop notch (90º vertical rotation) on a normal tripod head causes the camera frame to shift dramatically to the side and down altering your composition. Rather than having to reposition your setup to achieve the same composition the L-bracket means you can remove the camera from the tripod head, rotate it 90º, and reattach the camera without the need to change your setup or reposition your tripod.
